Crane collapse - Update

Merseyside Police and its partners can confirm that following the crane collapse on Monday, July 6, work to remove the damaged crane over the weekend has been completed and these parts have been taken away from site. Work is now being planned between the partner agencies to remove the counter balance, which is still embedded in the damaged building.

This phase of the operation can only been started following a full and detailed assessment of the scene to ensure that no further danger is posed to those involved in the operation, local residents or any other members of the public.

Now the damaged crane has been removed Park Lane has been re-opened and heavy plant used for the recovery phase have been removed and taken away from the site.

Now the crane has been removed and following a structural assessment the residents of 31/33 Cornhill are now able to return to their apartments.

Those residents who wish to return to their apartment are asked to attend the mobile police station on Park Lane. These residents will be escorted back into their apartments with the police to ensure the integrity of their property.

Unfortunately for the residents of 24/26 Cornhill, access to the building cannot be allowed as it has been declared structurally unsafe. Those residents have been contacted to discuss a longer-term solution to their accommodation needs.

Merseyside Police and its partners, Merseyside Fire and Rescue, Northwest Ambulance Service, Liverpool City Council, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), HTC Plant and Bowmer and Kirkland, would once again like to thank local residents for their continued patience and understanding during this difficult and complex operation.

Our paramount concern remains your safety and as such this operation will take some time. We will endeavour to complete the operation as quickly and safely as possible.

The joint investigation between the HSE and police remains ongoing. This means the site must continue to be treated as an investigation scene to preserve any potential evidence and only authorised personnel will be allowed access.

Alternative accommodation has been arranged for residents. All residents are advised to contact their contents insurers as soon as possible if they have not already done so. They are also invited to contact Fitzgerald Consulting (07904 564597), working on behalf of Royal Sun Alliance insurers, who will be dealing with any short-term issues.

Discussions regarding the retrieval of cars, car parking in the area and also the appointment of a specialist removals contractor to remove personal property from the apartments remain ongoing. When these discussions are completed you will be updated accordingly.

The building has been made secure and continues to be monitored by a private security firm and the police.

Once specialist contractors are allowed access to the building, discussions will commence upon the nature of works required to restore the property.

The crane driver, who suffered injuries to his head, chest and legs during the incident is being treated at hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

Liverpool City Council advises anyone who feels their physical or mental health has been affected by this incident to contact their own GP in the first instance. For social care assistance call the council’s Careline number 0151 233 3800.

Structural assessments are taking place this evening and we anticipate the results of these will be ready sometime tomorrow afternoon - an update will be sent out to all residents when the results have been received.
