Friday travel and movement update
In this week's update, Aigburth Road works continue, part of Jamaica Street re-opens, this weekend's parade route and events, partial Dale Street closure, Tunnel closures and Northern Line suspension.
Aigburth Road
Work is underway to replace a gas main on Aigburth Road between Beechwood Road and Dingle Lane. There have been some problems with phase 2 which is now expected to last for a further three weeks.
The work is being carried out in four phases:
-
Beechwood Road to St Margaret’s C of E School, (including the Aigburth Road/Aigburth Hall Avenue junction) - Complete
-
St. Margaret’s C of E School to the junction of Fulwood Park and Aigburth Rd for 8 weeks – Current Phase.
-
Fulwood Park to the junction of Colsbrooke Rd and Aigburth Road for 12 weeks.
-
The junction of Colsbrooke Rd and Aigburth Road along Colsbrooke Rd into Dingle Vale and into Dingle Lane for 4 weeks.
The work is being carried out under lane restrictions and there may be slight variations to the programme due to unforeseen circumstances. This information will be regularly updated.
Baltic Triangle
The CCMS scheme to improve the pavements and highways in the Baltic Triangle area has been on site since March 2010. Access to all local businesses is available at ALL times.
Sections of Jamaica Street are closed to traffic to allow the works to be completed safely and efficiently. The first section from Parliament Street to Jordan Street is now complete and the top section of Jamaica Street has been reopened to through traffic as far as Norfolk Street. Jamaica Street from Norfolk Street to Bridgwater Street is now closed for up to a month for the works to be carried out in this section although access is available via side streets to all businesses.
Road lining and traffic signal installation at the Parliament Street end of Jamaica Street will be completed by the end of next week.
City Centre Events
Brouhaha Parade, Saturday, 24th July – This parade will set off at 11am and due to reach Princes Park by 2pm. Police will be holding traffic along the route, which does cross Upper Parliament Street so do expect delays. The route is Myrtle Street, Catherine Street, Princes Road, Princes Boulevard and into Princes Park.
Don't forget about the Queen Victoria's visit and associated traffic orders.
Commercial District
Traffic onto Dale Street from the side of the flyover will only be able to turn into Hatton Garden. Traffic coming over the flyover is not affected. This will be a temporary closure to allow works to be carried out safely however consultation will begin with a view to making it permanent.
On Dale Street work is continuing between Vernon Street and Cheapside with the temporary road closure of Cheapside and Hockenhall Alley to allow the construction of new raised sections of footpath across the side roads along Dale Street. During this closure, access into Cheapside and Cunliffe Street will still be via Tithebarn Street but egress will be unavailable onto Dale Street making the streets temporarily two way. The two streets will not be closed simultaneously. Businesses and residents have been advised via consultation leaflets.
Knowledge Quarter/Mount Pleasant
Clarence Street will be entirely closed from Friday, 30th July, after evening peak, until Monday, 2nd August before morning peak, to allow the carriageway to be resurfaced. This will be subject to suitable weather conditions.
Work is continuing on the CCMS scheme in the Knowledge Quarter in the area around the Metropolitan Cathedral and Liverpool University.
The upper part of Mount Pleasant from the junction with Oxford Street to Brownlow Hill is closed to traffic to allow the works to be completed safely. Safe and accessible pedestrian facilities will be maintained throughout the extent of the works. The footpath around the perimeter of the Metropolitan Cathedral is now opened ahead of schedule to enable pedestrian movements to be facilitated around the works.
Access to the University car parks, Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, Cathedral House and the Catholic Chaplaincy to the University is being maintained at all times from the Brownlow Hill junction while Upper Mount Pleasant is closed.
Works to the area outside the steps to the Metropolitan Cathedral are continuing ahead of paving works to ensure completion of this footpath and revised road alignment before Hope Street Feast in September.
Footpath works are now in Great Orford Street. Work is almost complete on Clarence Street to kerbs and footpaths. Clarence Street will be closed after the evening peak traffic period on Friday, 30th July and reopen in time for morning peak traffic on Monday, 2nd August for the entire road to be resurfaced. These works are subject to suitable weather conditions and if there is heavy rain, it will have to be postponed. There will be further information in next week’s update.
Advance Traffic signal works to the junction at Clarence/Rodney/Mount Pleasant are complete ahead of schedule. New carriageway surfacing and road markings, including advanced stop lines for cyclists will be completed at a later date after kerbing and pedestrian tactile facilities have been installed.
The work area will then move in sections towards Hatton Garden before moving back along the opposite side of the road. The slip road from Hatton Garden onto Dale Street will be temporarily closed from Sunday, 1st August to allow the safe construction of the kerbs and footpaths. This closure will be carefully monitored and consultation will be begin to possibly make it permanent.
Delays are continuing to be experienced due to shallow underground services found on site but the City Council is working with partners to undertake diversion works to minimise delays to the construction period.
