Manchester Histories have been instrumental in bringing together a variety of groups and interested people to start early planning for the Bicentenary of the Liverpool – Manchester Railway in 2030, the world’s first intercity passenger railway line. The strap-line for the multi-year celebrations is Celebrating People, Places and Railways.

This is a very significant milestone which merits significant investment and serious planning if we are to make the most of this spectacular anniversary. Events are planned along the entire route of the railway and some of the places and towns are already organising to make sure they are involved in the up-coming events.

Given that the first railway started in Liverpool, at what is now Edge Hill Station, before it was eventually pushed through to present day Lime Street Station, city centre residents should be open to getting involved in the forthcoming bicentenary events.

One item of real interest is the Wapping Tunnel whose entrance can still be seen on Kings Dock Street. This should be of interest to Waterfront residents particularly those who live in Wapping Quays whose warehouse was close to the railway yard emerging from the tunnel. Undoubtedly the cargoes deposited in the warehouse by the ships left the city via the Wapping Tunnel railway connection to Edge Hill. More can be read HERE:
