Engage is holding a Festival Gardens Listening Event  on Thursday 29th January to give everyone affected by the proposed development from Urban Splash and Igloo a chance to express their views about the kind of project they would like to see.

Since we invited Bordeaux to speak at one of our seminars (Seminar Two WHS Cities of Inspiration 2018) we learnt a great deal about how to involve residents and civic society in general in the planning process and specifically the design of new neighbourhoods.

The French do things very differently. Today many residents woke up to find a new development is planned for the Brunswick Dock area having already had 2 previous plans submitted, approved and come to nothing. Engage was involved many years ago now in an early process to assist an architect and developer in bringing forward plans for Brunswick Dock. Not surprisingly perhaps if was a Frenchman – Christophe Egret, from the Studio Egret West – who wanted to hear from local people before he set to work drawing up plans. What he came up with was amazing and residents loved his concept. Then the economic crash of 2008 collapsed those plans.

These images below are from the drawings submitted to Liverpool City Council by Romal Capital who are working with Maro to deliver this project.  No doubt there will be a requirement for Planning Consent to be given that a consultation process will be undertaken to canvas residents views. This is the preferred way we do planning in England. You get to have your say once the professionals have agreed on plans. Our Festival Gardens event bucks this trend and tries a different path.
