Sadly the great plans that had been approved by the Council for the new Cruise Liner Terminal in Liverpool have been shelved.

Only recently the Planning Committee agreed the detailed designs for the ‘landmark’ development see:

The proposals had received outline planning consent as far back as 2018. However at the end of last year the Council decided to pull out of operating the Cruise Terminal and started  looking for another operator. Many residents had high hopes that the great work done within the Council in running the cruise liner visits in temporary accommodation would at last be upgraded to a new £88m permanent location close by see:

‘Plans for new £88m cruise terminal are shelved’. LBN 03.04.24

However the new operator has now informed the city that it will not build the proposed terminal but enhance the current one with an investment of around £25m. The city is doing it’s best to put on a brave face and tell only a positive story see:

‘Liverpool’s £25m cruise port plan will see passengers double’  BBC News 03.04.24

The new operator is Global Ports Holding (GPH), the world’s largest independent cruise port operator, and this will be their first port in the UK. They are promising to build a new terminal but where is not yet public knowledge. The new pontoon will be alongside the current one enabling double the number of ships visiting each year.  Looks possible that Peel have agreed to allow GPH to build where the temporary structure has been for some time now.

Further news emerged on Monday 8th April 2024 that there will indeed be a new hotel built and it looks likely that a new terminal building will be delivered on the same site as the temporary terminal is now. So probably both an hotel and terminal together on Peel’s prestigious site closest to the Pier Head and Three Graces. Makes a lot of sense. See news item HERE LBN 08.04.24
