The above image is of the Elbphilharmonie situated in the Speicherstadt warehouse district, recently designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, and overlooking Germany’s famed port city of Hamburg and is their new architectural landmark, home to two esteemed concert halls as well as luxury residences and the Westin Hotel.
The third and final seminar in the Engage seminar series WHS Cities of Inspiration focuses on Hamburg. We will be welcoming an architect Christoph Schwarzkopf and also the World Heritage Site Coordinator Bernd Paulowitz. We have already learnt so much from Strasbourg and Bordeaux about how WHS cities are working with their UNESCO designation to deliver a built environment that is distinctive and references the heritage narrative that is unique to their city. Hamburg being a port city like Liverpool has many similarities and it will be fascinating to hear how they are working with their UNESCO listing to promote progress and development.
