About Canning Georgian Quarter
The Canning Georgian Quarter is a large area of almost uniformly residential Georgian architecture. The area derives its name from one of its principal thoroughfares, Canning Street, which was named after George Canning (1770–1827) a British politician who served as Foreign Secretary and Prime Minister. The neighbourhood has a rich mix of private and social housing groups. Much of the housing stock has been preserved due to the careful management of a number of Registered Providers (social landlords) and many of the houses have been divided into flats. There are also houses that are still home to some long-standing residents of the city centre.
